Reaching more patients while addressing our environmental impact
Environmental challenges have never been more urgent than they
are today. As we reach more patients globally, our
CO2 emissions are rising. Therefore, our key task is to
decouple the growth in our business from our CO2
emissions.
We know many of the most important ways to reach our
ambition. However, it is also clear that we together with partners
must find new solutions that have not yet been identified.
100% renewable power at all our production sites
We
already have a strong focus on our own emissions (also known as Scope
1 and 2 emissions) since it’s within our direct control. As a key
example, we have sourced 100% renewable power for all our production
sites since 2020 – and our target is to have zero Scope 1 and 2
emissions by 2030.
Scope 3 includes all emissions outside our owned operations – and they are hard to control. However, we remain committed to our target to decouple our emissions from our growth to achieve absolute emission reductions within scope 3.
We need to take action within and beyond our own operations when considering our environmental impact. Today, our supply chain accounts for more than 95% of our total CO2 emissions. Therefore, it’s crucial for us to work closely together with our suppliers. We have set ambitious targets to pave the way.
To ensure that we are on the right track to reach net zero CO2 emissions in 2045, we have set a near-term target to reduce CO2 emissions by 33% by 2033 compared to 2024. Our target is aligned with climate science and set to be approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. The 2033 target is in line with the goal of keeping global warming well-below 2°C as outlined in The Paris Agreement.
Setting the ambition is the easy part. The difficult part is figuring out how to turn ambition into tangible problem-solving. For instance, we take action by sourcing low-carbon materials, transition to low-carbon transportation for product distribution, convert our tier 1 suppliers to renewable energy while also working with tier 1 suppliers to set climate targets in line with science.
To reach our target, environmental criteria will be part of all new and current supplier contracts.
