National Changing Diabetes® programme
Novo Nordisk's National Changing Diabetes® programme (NCDP) aims to improve standards of diabetes care in both developed and developing countries. A top priority is to get diabetes on the public health agenda in order to drive earlier diagnosis and treatment.
The NCDP helps build national healthcare capacity and develop national disease strategies based on partnerships with various stakeholders. The programme is spearheaded by Novo Nordisk through its affiliates. Activities include educating nurses, doctors and patients, supporting diabetes patient organisations, equipping diabetes clinics, and working with governments.
Performance 2007
By the end of 2007, 406 separate activities had been carried out by Novo Nordisk affiliates in 66 countries in both the developed and the developing world. Click here to get a full overview of the outreach of Novo Nordisk's National Changing Diabetes® programme.
Here are some examples of Changing Diabetes® activities spearheaded by Novo Nordisk affiliates around the world.
US: Charting federal spending on diabetes
In the US, Novo Nordisk the National Changing Diabetes® Programme (NCDP) is a multifaceted initiative that brings together innovators in diabetes education, treatment and policy to improve the lives of people with diabetes. NCDP strives to create change in the U.S. health care system to provide dramatic improvement in the prevention and care of diabetes. In 2007, one of its initiatives was the publication of a Study of Federal Spending on Diabetes in America. The study was commissioned by Novo Nordisk under contract to Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. The study, based on federal spending data from FY 2005, is the first of its kind to look at all federally funded programs that have an impact on diabetes prevention and treatment.
The study found that it costs the federal government nearly $80 billion ($79.7) more to treat people with diabetes than those without the disease. Among the recommendations is the need to establish a National Changing Diabetes® Coordinator to provide federal leadership in aligning efforts across all federal agencies with diabetes-related responsibility. Since 1980, the number of Americans suffering from diabetes has doubled to more than 20 million, and that number is projected to double again by 2025. For more information, please visit www.ncdp.com.
Russia: International club reaches out to children
Novo Nordisk in Russia has for many years focused on reaching out to children with diabetes. It holds children’s diabetes camps to educate children with recently acquired diabetes to control the condition and lead a normal life. In 2007 the fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen, a much- loved figure in Russia, inspired the “Ole Lukøje’” club, named after an Andersen character who leads children into dreamland. The club, which includes 200 children and is still growing, is aimed at giving children a chance to communicate with each other about living with diabetes in a fun and creative environment. It takes inspiration from the DAWN programme that puts focus on the psycho-social aspects of living with diabetes.
Brazil: DAWN Youth survey launched
As part of the DAWN Youth programme, Novo Nordisk Brazil is exploring the attitude, wishes and needs of young people with diabetes through a web-based survey focused on healthcare professionals, parents of children with diabetes, and young people. As part of the initiative, a local DAWN Youth website was launched, a newsletter created and sent to the target audience. Forums were also created within diabetes communities. By end of 2007, 285 healthcare professionals, 340 young people and 500 parents had taken part in the survey. The results will be used as part of the global DAWN Youth survey to improve diabetes care for young people.
Vietnam: Training nurses in diabetes care
Novo Nordisk in Vietnam conducted training in diabetes care for 250 nurses from hospitals in Hochiminh City. Awareness of diabetes and how to treat it is low among healthcare professionals in Vietnam. In Vietnam, Novo Nordisk also collaborated with hospitals to form diabetes patient clubs in order to enhance awareness of the disease and its treatment.
France: Running for diabetes
Through a variety of means, Novo Nordisk France has been raising awareness about diabetes among the general public, including production and distribution of educational booklets about diabetes, establishment of a media prize for journalism related to diabetes, and a host of activities on the annual World Diabetes Day. In 2007, a relay race was held in association with the famous Paris-Versailles run. Participants in the 16 km run were offered a chance to warm-up in the Relay Santé area, next to the run start-up. For each runner who joined the relay race, Novo Nordisk agreed to sponsor 1 Euro to benefit young people with diabetes through a national diabetes association, AJD. All 21,000 runners in the Paris-Versailles run were offered free blood glucose screening as well. A total of 11,000 euros was collected for the AJD.
