Employee volunteering on the rise

Novo Nordisk’s employees care about their community and conceived and carried out more TakeAction! activities in 2009 than ever before since the launch of the global volunteer programme. All employees in Novo Nordisk are encouraged to engage in social or environmental action during working hours that can support sustainable solutions to specific needs in their own community or other areas where Novo Nordisk can make a difference, such as towards people with diabetes in need of care.

Throughout the company’s history being socially responsible has been a core element of the way we do business by caring for people and striving to improve quality of life. This includes people who depend on our products, people who participate in clinical research, the communities we operate in and Novo Nordisk employees. With an aspiration to defeat diabetes, we invest in providing improved health outcomes, raising awareness and improving access to diabetes and haemophilia care around the world through the Changing Diabetes® and Changing Possibilities in Haemophilia® brand promise. And to remain an attractive workplace, Novo Nordisk invests in health and safety and people development, and promotes a culture of diversity.

Making a difference to the people we supports with our products and services is also what the volunteering programme TakeAction! is all about. But the activities also address social issues in the local community and help the environment. The programme is employee-driven, fully supported by senior and local management, and coordinated by corporate headquarters. Every New Year the most impressive initiative of the year is chosen by the Novo Nordisk Executive Management and honoured with the Take Action! Award.

Winners share

Every year employees can nominate their TakeAction! activity for the annual TakeAction! Award. The Award is given to the unit or affiliate that has made a special effort to live out the company values; the Triple Bottom Line in new ways, showing responsibility and supporting a sustainable development. This competition encourages sharing of better practices; the award is a scrapbook, that moves from one winning team to the next, with stories and photos from previous years’ winners and a travel grant of 4,700 US dollars for the winning team to organise a visit to a Novo Nordisk affiliate or site of their own choice where they present their TakeAction! activity and experiences to inspire colleagues and share best practice.
