Novo Nordisk among global top 50 low-carbon pioneers

Novo Nordisk is rated number 14 on CNBC European Business magazine’s ground-breaking new list ranking the world’s top low-carbon pioneers. The list, published in the January/February 2007 issue of the magazine is the first of its kind, ranking businesses that have connected climate change to their bottom line and profited. It includes industry pioneers creating new low-emission technologies, champions of environmental sustainability within existing businesses, and leaders in the international CO2 trading market.

Novo Nordisk’s strategy on climate change ties in with its responsible business approach and environmental management. In January 2006, the company signed an agreement with WWF that made it a member of the Climate Savers programme.

This programme invites leading global businesses to demonstrate that investing in reduction options can benefit the long-term health of the business. Under this agreement Novo Nordisk has set an ambitious target for the company’s CO2 reductions: to achieve a reduction of 10% of its CO2 emissions by 2014 compared to 2004. To do so, the projected significant growth in production needs to be decoupled from the levels of energy needed in the processes. The climate strategy has two elements: energy-saving initiatives, and more use of renewable energy. Novo Nordisk is looking into opportunities such as windmills, solar power and geothermal energy. The top place on CNBC European Business magazine’s list was awarded to James Murdoch, Chief Executive, British Sky Broadcasting Group, whose company was the first to set itself the goal of carbon neutrality, and who is a passionate champion of environmentally responsible business.
