Novo Nordisk in Gentofte
With facilities in eight different locations and approximately 1,800 employees, Novo Nordisk is a major part of the business community in the municipality of Gentofte, north of Copenhagen.
Research, development, production and quality
The production area is the largest organisational unit located in Gentofte. We produce NovoSeven® (for haemophilia patients), GlucaGen® (for diabetics with hypoglycaemia + for diagnosis of the pancreas and the intestines) and Norditropin® (growth hormone).
NovoSeven® is an interesting product with unique potential that has experienced explosive growth since it was introduced. Research into several new indications is fueling high expectations for the product’s future growth, as well.
GlucaGen® and Norditropin® have been on the market for many years but still have good prospects. Within the last couple of years, Norditropin® has been introduced in a liquid form. This, in combination with advanced pen systems for the administration of the product, has kept demand for the product strong.
In the production area, we work with fermentation, purification, filling and packaging. The organisation also comprises analysis laboratories, technical service and quality assurance.
Site Gentofte, however, is much more than production. At our location you will also find development laboratories with pilot plants (small test plants that manufacture products for clinical trials) dedicated to production of new pharmaceutical products based on both well-described and unknown genetically engineered proteins. The Hagedorn Research Institute is also located here. The institute researches new treatments within the diabetes area.
Novo Nordisk’s hospital, Steno Diabetes Center, is also part of Site Gentofte. Steno Diabetes Center consists of two equally sized units, a hospital unit and a research unit. The hospital treats approximately 5,500 diabetes patients yearly, primarily from the greater Copenhagen area. The hospital applies the newest techniques and educational methods. In 2001, the hospital was one of the first in Denmark to introduce electronic medical records for patients. We have established quality assurance routines and offer courses to both diabetes patients and doctors.
Research is a consolidated part of the hospital’s clinical base and covers broad areas within molecular biology, genetics and epidemiology. The objective of the research is clear – to prevent diabetes and to impede the development of life-threatening or disabling complications. Steno Diabetes Center participates in a number of educational projects both in Denmark and abroad.
Global Quality, located on Nybrovej, monitors the quality of our products and handles customer complaints. Sandtoften functions as a project house for large-scale development projects.
